All About Egg Quality

So, what is egg quality?

Egg quality refers to the health and viability of the egg — its ability to mature properly, fertilize, divide into a healthy embryo, and implant.

It’s not about how many eggs you have. It’s about how well your eggs function.

An egg with good quality has:

  • Healthy mitochondria (to power early development)
  • A stable chromosomal structure
  • Low oxidative stress
  • Strong response to hormonal cues

And guess what?
Most of these are influenced by your internal environment.

This is why we focus so much on minerals, blood sugar, inflammation, stress, and gut health.
Because the egg you ovulate this month?
It started developing three months ago.

What egg quality is not:

  • It’s not determined by age alone
  • It’s not based on your AMH
  • It’s not something you’re powerless to change
  • And it’s definitely not a fixed sentence

You can absolutely improve your egg quality over time.
We’ve seen women do this in their 30s and 40s — especially when they support the foundations that fuel healthy cells.

How can you test your egg quality?

Here’s the truth: There’s no single lab that can directly test egg quality.
But we can gather clues by looking at how your body is functioning.

Here’s what we look at with our clients:

  • Cycle tracking: A healthy egg leads to clear ovulation signs, strong temps after ovulation, and a luteal phase of 10+ days.
  • Mid-luteal progesterone: Levels above 10 ng/mL suggest solid ovulation and good follicle development.
  • Thyroid health: Poor thyroid function can affect egg maturation. We look for TSH between 0.5–2.0 and healthy Free T4 (1.4-1.8) and Free T3 (3.2 and higher).
  • Mineral status: Minerals like magnesium, potassium, selenium, and zinc support the mitochondria inside your eggs. We assess this with HTMA.
  • Inflammation and gut health: High inflammation increases oxidative stress, which damages egg DNA. We often use GI-MAP testing or look at CRP, homocysteine, and gut symptoms.
  • Fertilization outcomes (if doing IUI or IVF): If embryos arrest early or fail to fertilize, it can point to egg or sperm quality issues.

The goal isn’t to chase perfection — it’s to create an internal environment where your eggs can thrive.

A new perspective to carry with you

You don’t need hundreds of perfect eggs.
You need one healthy one.
One resilient egg, supported by your nourishment, rhythms, minerals, and healing.

That’s the power of functional fertility.
